The SOMETHING NEW collection is the result of the selective integration of musical energy into the painting process. Specifically, high energy is derived from musicians like Miles Davis or Creedance Clearwater and is reflected in the art. By contrast, the compositions of Itzak Perlman or YoYo Ma may produce a pensive, meditative energy and result in a more relaxed, tranquil, painting.

Repeating the same piece of music or the work of a given musician over the time a single canvas is painted, provides continuity from one day to the next. It seems as if there has been no end to the day and beginning of another, as if I have not gone to sleep over night but have continued to paint my way through. Some paintings continue for 4 to 6 months and ultimately it is inevitable to discover the music has become an integral element of the painting like the color red. Frequently, I find that I do not enjoy seeing the painting without the music as if the color red has been removed. A significant element is missing.

Finally, I have discovered that I now prefer what I describe as open-ended, atonal music, without lyrics or a determined, steady beat. Morton Feldman, Gyorgy Lygeti and Arnold Shoenberg provide this opportunity, allowing my mind to expand into “free verse” or even “stream of consciousness” because there is no verbiage, no rhythm to jar me out of my painting trance. When I am inside the painting and I don’t know where the painting ends and I begin, Art Happens!
